New Haven Beats Stonehill 23-16

Sharieff Hall caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Osiecki for the game-winning touchdown with 21 seconds left. It was the Chargers first home this season and their first Northeast-10 Conference win.
Third quarter
Victor Jones scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to put New Haven up 15-10. Ryan Osiecki's two-piont conversion attempt was picked off.
Second quarter
Osiecki connected with Jason Thompson for a 5-yard touchdown with just 4 seconds left in the first half. Michael Herrera's extra point was blocked, keeping Stonehill ahead. The Skyhawks broke a 3-3 tie when Danny Carducci scored on a 2-yard touchdown run at the 12:14 mark.
Mistakes Continue
Costly mistakes have been the theme of the Chargers' season thus far. With a chance to cut into Stonehill's 10-3 lead, New Haven had a bad snap on a field-goal attempt and then was called for intentional grounding on the same play.
Penalties
Stonehill has been fortunate. The Skyhawks, leaders of the NE-10 in most penalties, have five penalty. But New Haven hasn't been able to take advantage.
First quarter
Herrera booted a 35-yard field goal on the game's first drive to give New Haven a 3-0 lead. Kicker Brendan Gorey responded for Stonehill with a 37-yard field goal to tie the game at 3-3.
Osiecki was 4-of-6 for 45 yards. Stonehill quarterback Tim Morrison was 4-of-4 for 57 yards.

SCSU leads AIC 17-9

Southern wins
The Owls' terrific defense kept AIC off the board the entire second half.
Jerome Pinckney sealed the game with an interception with just under 2 minutes to play.
Final score:
SCSU 17, AIC 9

We're in the fourth
Southern's drive stalled and punted back to AIC which is within a TD and a 2-pointer away from tyng the game.
14 minutes left in the game.
SCSU 17, AIC 9

Third-quarter action
Dan Bassani misses a 29 yard field goal attempt in a fast moving third.
SCSU still leads.
The Owls are wearing out the AIC defense with the running game. They're driving for a big score as the third ends.
SCSU 17, AIC 9

More mistakes
After a pass tipped off Jarom Freeman's hands and was intercepted by AIC, the Yellow Jackets took over at the 26 and scored several plays later when Rob Parent connected with Davon LaGrier from 7 yards out.
4:30 left in the half.
Chris Hazelton booted a 25 yard field goal late in the first half to extend the SCSU lead
SCSU 17, AIC 9

Extending the lead
After another botched punt attempt by AIC, SCSU took over at the Yellow Jackets' 41 and Roberts fired a beautiful TD pass to Andre Privott for a TD.
That's 3 punts in the game that have gone awry. We're early in the second quarter.
SCSU 14, AIC 2

On the board
Southern got a break of its own when AIC botched the snap on the punt. SCSU took over at the 3 and three plays later Chris Roberts powered it into the end zone for a TD.
ACI punter Dan Bassani had a chance to do what Hazelton did and give the Owls a safety but tried to make a play, fumbled the ball and eventually SCSU covered the ball at the 3.
AIC should have taken the safety.
SCSU 7, AIC 2

Game time
Special teams have cost the Owls aleady. A snap to punter Chris Hazelton went over his head and Hazelton carried it through his own end zone and fumbled out of the end zone for an AIC safety.
Just 1:30 into the game and AIC leads 2-0.
AIC 2, SCSU 0

Pre-game

This will be the first game played on American International's new artificial turf field.
Last year Southern defeated AIC at Miller Field which resembled a dirt parking lot at certain spots of the surface.
AIC now has a sparkling clean stadium with lights and a synthetic surface. AIC has plenty of speed and hopes the new surface will help. The Yellow Jackets are already 3-0 on the season and this is their first home game.
Last year Southern won a hotly contested affair to clinch an NCAA berth. Before that game the two teams nearly mixed it up a la Florida State vs. Miami. This year, again the two teams traded barbs at midfield 30 minutes before kickoff and the were acessed matching unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. It really appeared it was AIC which initiated the shouting match.
Either way, this should be a gteat contest and although it's just the second game of the conference season for both teams, it could be for the title.
The two teams were picked 1-2 in the preseason poll and do have the most talent and the top coaches.
Game-time is 26 minutes away and I'll have updates throughout the contest.

SCSU vs. Pace

It's over
The Owls wrapped up their first win of the season. It was a convincing performance but Pace did move the ball some in the second half.
Jarom Freeman also suffered a leg injury with 8 minutes to go in the fourth quarter but he was running on the sideline later and seemed OK. He did not return to action.
FINAL SCORE: SCSU 27, PACE 10

Still fighting
Pace QB Romanick hit Eric Ortega on a 41-yard TD pass to get the Setters closer.
There's 12:49 to play and Pace is trying to get back into this one.
SCSU 27, Pace 10

End of the third quarter
Pace snapped the shutout with a 37-yard field goal.
Rashaad Slowley then got into the SCSU backfield and continued to impress.
The sophomore had 45 yards on the ground in the first half and rushed for 32 more on a 3rd-quarter drive. He looks to be another in a long line of great Owl tailbacks.
Hazelton added another field goal.
SCSU 27, Pace 3

Back in action
If you stayed home for this one, you're probably a lot drier than the rest of us. This game has been played in torrential downpours.
Joe Romanick is in at QB for Pace which has a big hill to climb in the second half.

Halftime
To add injury to insult, Pace QB Ray Gregg was injured with 1 second remaining in the first half. Lining up in the shotgut, the snap sailed over Gregg's head and he raced back to 19 to recover the loose ball.
But Gregg was tackled by a pair of Owls and appeared to injure his shoulder on the play.
This will certainly make any big comeback difficult for the Setters, which were dominated in the first half.
SCSU 24, Pace 0

Northeast 10 opener
Tonight's game is the NE-10 opener and SCSU looks ready for the conference slate get going. The Owls were the preseason favorite to win the conference and are rolling early in the second quarter.
Roberts just hit Pete DiGangi with a 3-yard TD pass to extend the lead.
SCSU 17, Pace 0

It's Raining ... points
Jarom Freeman looks like he might be on his way to one of his patented big nights. Freeman capped a long drive with a 10-yard run and Southern has extended its lead.
It's still in the first quarter.
SCSU 10, Pace 0

On the board - already
The Owls took the opening kickoff and marched right down the field to open the scoring. Jarom Freeman had 21 yards on the ground on the drive and Roberts hit Andre Privott and Willie Epps for first downs.
But Southern had to settle for a 21-yad field goal by Chris Hazelton as Pace got pressure on Roberts in the red zone.
SCSU 3, Pace 0

Game-time
It's the second home game of the season for the Owls and once again it's raining.
SCSU needs a win more than it needs good weather but it has hindered attendance once again.
SCSU received the kickoff and Chris Roberts is back under center. The Owls are desperate to get things untracked offensively. Fullback Curtis Shappy is out with broken ribs and safety Kyle Sandberg will miss the game with a concussion.
Check back often for updates.

College Football - Week 3

SCSU back in action

The Owls host Pace Friday night at 7 p.m.
The game kicks off the Northeast-10 Conference season.
SCSU is 0-2 after losses to Indiana-Pa. and Bryant. Both games were true tests for Southern and the Owls played well in the opener but suffered a disheartening 28-21 loss.
Last week at Bryant, SCSU really never got untracked offensively and lost 19-10. Southern was stopped a on a crucial 4th-and-goal at the 1 yard line when QB Chris Roberts tried to crack the goal-line and was ruled short of the end zone.
Tail back Jarom Freeman said after the game that he saw the play and that Roberts had indeed scored.
That would have given SCSU the lead and one never knows what would have happened after that.
Still, it was a disappointing offensive performance especially for a team that virtually has scored at will over the past couple of seasons. Southern has not got its passing game going yet.
Last week Roberts completed 17 passes to 11 different receivers which shows he is spreading the ball around. But Andre Privott led the team with just three catches and has five for the year.
He scored on a 27 yard pass play last week, SCSU's biggest play of the year so far.
"You really can't force big plays," SCSU coach Rich Cavanaugh said. "Sure we'd like to get more but you really game plan for them, they just happen.
"You would like to score at least 21 points a game, though, so that's disappointing."
SCSU should have an easy time this week against Pace. The Setters looked better last year and added several Division I transfers to its roster this season but was humbled by Division III Salisbury last week.
Salisbury may be a DIII power but Southern has been playing a higher quality opponents thus far.

SCSU at Bryant, live

Final push
SCSU needs two scores and its drive stalled at the 21 yard line.
SCSU looks like it will drop to 0-2 on the season

Crunch time
Bryant took over at the 20 and marched the length of the field on 16 plays. A back-breaking drive. Bryant fumbled twice on the drive and both times recovered the ball.
The drive was capped when Croce rolled out and hit Matt Tracey in the end zone for the score.
With 5:57, the score is: BRYANT 19, SCSU 10

Edging closer
Hazelton booted a 30-yard field goal to cut the deficit to: BRYANT 13, SCSU 10

3rd-quarter action
After forcing a punt, Southern drove to the 1-yard line but Roberts was stopped short on a keeper just inches away from the goal line.
Bryant took over and was forced to punt from its own end zone.
Martin Manson returned the punt to the 15 yard line so SCSU is back in business.
With 3:30 to play, BRYANT 13, SCSU 7

Half time
SCSU got a much-needed score with a minute left in the first half. Chris Roberts found Andre Privott open in the end zone and Privott just hung onto the ball.
That followed another field goal by Bird of 27 yards.
Score at the half: BRYANT 13, SCSU 7

Time to play catch-up
Chris Bird hit a 37 yard field goal to increase the Bulldogs' lead. 10:22 left in the first half. BRYANT 10, SCSU 0

End of the 1st quarter
SCSU dodged a bullet when punter Chris Hazleton fumbled the snap and Bryant blocked the punt. But Bryant could not advance past the Owls' 26 and turned the ball over on downs.
SCSU got the ball back and Jerome Cunningham made his first collegiate reception but SCSU was again forced to punt.
After the first quarter the score remains; BRYANT 7, SCSU 0

Game time
SCSU took possession to start the game and ran the ball well.
Jarom Freeman was impressive with two good runs, one for 18 yard. But Chris Roberts was sacked and the drive later stalled.
SCSU punted into the end zone and Bryant's first drive began at the 20.
Bryant then drove the length of the field and scored on a 36 yad pass from Mike Croce to Khalel Pritchard.
With 5 minutes to play in the first quarter, Bryant leads 7-0.

Early college football updates

UConn kicks off the season at Ohio tonight at 7 p.m.
In Lincoln, Pa., UNH is rolling in its first game since 2003.
The Chargers are off to a 23-0 lead in the second quarter. If they win this one, it will surely take a lot of pressure off UNH as the competition gets a lot harder soon.
In a month, the Elm City battle takes place at SCSU as the Owls play host to New Haven.
Kickoff here at Bryant in 30 minutes.

Live from Bulldog Stadium

We'll have live updates from Southern Connecticut State's football game at Bryant throughout the game.

The weather is sensational. Last year's game at Bryant was played as the remnants of a hurricane brushed the area. The game was played in relatively dry and windy conditions but heavy rains came at the end of the contest.
Southern lost at Bryant 39-36 in that contest, which turned out to be quarterback Steve Armstong's last collegiate contest. Armstrong was sacked and snapped a bone in his leg and he never returned.
Armstrong had hoped to play again this season seeking a medical red-shirt but he developed issues with his knee and decided to call it a career.
Armstrong was a remarkable competitor and great passer and despite Chris Roberts' immediate success, he was missed.
Roberts gets the call again today at SCSU enters the contest with an 0-1 mark. This is Bryant's home opener.
Updates will come throughout the game.

Football begins

UNH: The Return
The University of New Haven resurrects its football program on Saturday.
The Chargers travel to Lincoln-Pa. for its first game in six years. It may be a good spot for the Chargers. Lincoln was just 1-9 last year.
You really don’t know what to expect from UNH this year. How long will it take Peter Rossomando to rebuild the storied franchise? UNH was picked last in the NE-10 because the other coaches don’t know what to expect either.
Surely expectations are high for quarterback Ryan Osiecki. The transfer from Louisville has a big arm but his receivers are green and his line, as a matter of facts both lines, are untested.
As they say, line play is the most important element of football and no one knows to expect from either side of the ball.
UNH does have skill players but if Osiecki doesn’t have the time to throw the ball it could be a long year.
Don’t expect much from the Chargers against the heavyweights of the NE-10 like SCSU and AIC but this week could be fun.
It will surely be interesting
SCSU: Game 2 ahead
As for the Owls, last week’s loss to Indiana-Pa. proved they are certainly among the nation’s elite teams but to join the top echelon Southern has to prove it can beat them.
SCSU has certainly come a long way from its loss at California, Pa. a few years ago but the Owls gave up three big plays in last week’s loss.
Southern watched an NFL prospect return the opening kick of the second half for a touchdown which proved to be the back-breaker. Quarterback Chris Roberts also threw back across the field trying for a score late in the first half. Had SCSU scored then it would have taken a 21-0 lead into the half.
But Roberts’ pass was picked off and returned for a touchdown. That gave IUP plenty of momentum heading into the intermission.
Couple that with the kickoff return to start the second half and the game was tied and Southern was deflated.
SCSU also blew coverage on IUP’s game-winning touchdown pass but it is really hard to complain about the defense which was flat out impressive most of the game.
SCSU also missed a short field goal in the game and that hurt.
Still, Southern is solid but gets another one of those tests this week at Bryant.
SCSU just has to show it can beat the really good teams.
As for Roberts, he has been nothing short of remarkable since claiming the job of starting QB. Once again he was named to the NE-10 weekly honor roll and led SCSU to 21 points despite working with a whole set of new receivers.
Roberts was battered around so much during a stint in the third quarter that his contact lenses were falling out. But he missed just one snap. He is a true warrior on the field.
