Penn State's Loxsom, Mount St. Mary’s FitzSimons compete at NCAAs
Hamden’s Tom FitzSimons is in 17th place after the first day of the decathlon at the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships.
FitzSimons, a senior at Mount St. Mary’s, has 3,749 points after competing in the 100 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400. He had the sixth-best time of 48.30 seconds in the 400, which was good for 876 points.
FitzSimons was eighth in the 100 with a time of 11.02, earning him 856.
Boise State senior Kurt Felix leads the competition with 4,187.
The decathlon will conclude today with the 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meters.
New Haven’s Cas Loxsom, a junior at Penn State, failed to qualify for the finals in the men’s 800 meters.
The former Wilbur Cross star finished third in his preliminary heat with a time of 1:46.85.
The top two finishers in each heat advance to the final.
If Loxsom were in the third heat, he would have posted the winning time and advanced to Friday’s final.
Loxsom has qualified for the U.S. Olympic trials in the 800 later this month.
