NEW HAVEN FOOTBALL LIVE: LIU Post at New Haven

THE TAILGATE REPORT: The keys to the game

EXTRA CHARGE: LIU Post bigger challenge for Chargers

WEST HAVEN >> Despite outscoring opponents 135-26 in two straight victories, University of New Haven coach Pete Rossomando said little can be drawn from those wins as UNH prepares for LIU Post on Saturday at 1 p.m. at DellaCamera Stadium.
“I don’t think there’s anything you can carry over other than some confidence,” Rossomando said. “You’ve got to take each week as its own individual week, and (LIU Post) is a really good football team.” Read more here

NEW HAVEN LIVE: New Haven battles Saint Anselm

EXTRA CHARGE: New Haven using 2010 loss as motivation

WEST HAVEN >> University of New Haven coach Pete Rossomando has not forgotten about the 35-26 loss to Saint Anselm that kept the Chargers out of the 2010 Division II playoffs. With the Chargers travelling to Manchester, N.H., to face the Hawks Friday, he made sure this New Haven team knew about the loss, too.
“That’s probably the toughest loss, next to the IUP loss (in the 2012 Division II playoffs), that I’ve ever had to endure,” said Rossomando, who told the team about the loss after Thursday’s practice. “That was our first chance at the playoffs and we had it in our grasp. They just played much better than us and they won the game.”

College football picks for Week 5; Michigan is the best bet

Michigan will be angry after its embarrassing performance at home against Akron a week ago. It is clear the Wolverines weren't focussed against the FCS foe.
How bad was that narrow win? Well, consider that Akron was nowhere near as good as the Appalachian State team that shocked the Big Blue a few years ago at Ann Arbor.
That spells bad news for the Huskies who probably couldn't beat Akron anyways.
Expect Michigan to roll on the road at UConn just as UCLA did as my best bet a week ago.

Best Bet: Michigan.
Preferred: USC, Kansas State, Arkansas State, Oregon State.

Here are the lines. Picks are in BOLD.

NEW HAVEN FOOTBALL LIVE: New Haven battles Pace at home

After a tough 45-14 road loss to West Chester (PA.) to open the season, the Chargers head home looking to right the ship against Pace at 1 p.m. today. Below you'll find a new episode of Extra Charge, pregame analysis in the Tailgate Report, live blogs, live stats and more.

CHARGER NATION: Postgame report

WEST HAVEN >> University of New Haven starting quarterback Ronnie Nelson said the Chargers’ Week 1 loss was a wake-up call. Saturday against Pace, UNH showed just how alert they were with a 65-0 drubbing of the Setters at Ralph DellaCamera Stadium in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both. Read more here

EXTRA CHARGE: Champions bounce back

WEST HAVEN >> Hoping to right the wrongs from a 45-14 Week 1 loss to West Chester, University of New Haven senior quarterback Ronnie Nelson told the Chargers’ receivers to stay on the field for extra reps following Thursday’s practice.
Coach Pete Rossomando wasn’t surprised. He said last week’s loss was a wake-up call heading into a matchup against Pace University at Ralph DellaCamera Stadium today at 1 p.m.“The guys are a little testy,” Rossomando said. “They haven’t been 0-1 in a while. They’ve got to respond.” Read more here

NCAA picks for Week 3; picks for every game and best bet

After a fine week 2 here we go for week 3 of our college football picks.

Best Bet: UCLA: The fact that the Bruins are getting 4 here is a joke. Nebraska is ranked and they are at home but there is no team destined for a meteoric rise to the Top 10 like UCLA. Get on them while the lines are still in your favor. This is the best UCLA team in many years and Brett Hundley is a Heisman Trophy candidate you'll be hearing about soon.

Other preferred bets: USC, Wake Forest, Penn State, Maryland.

In the I wouldn't bet it category but you have to pick it: I'll take Alabama to pull away late and cover the 7 against the Aggies.

Good luck. Here are the lines and the picks for every game are in bold.

SCSU quarterback JJ Jablonski

It's 30 minutes to kick off.
Here is an article on IUP quarterback Mike Box, who began his collegiate career at UConn.

Jack Mallis out for today's game. He is a powerhouse running back who was injured late in the preseason. Also sidelined are: Jesse el_Ghoul, Chris Hogan and Alexander Williams. All are freshmen.

Chip Malafronte along side today. Check out Sunday's Register for his Gravy and a column on today's opener.

Southern is tied with Indiana Pa at the half 14-14.
Looks liked Vaughn Magee is out with a possible concussion. He had 9 carries for 39 yards when they took his helmet off after getting popped near the goal line.
John Moscatel has 10 carries for 51 yards and has scored both Southern TDs.
For IUP, ranked 10th in the nation in Division II, Erik Finklea has a 45-yard TD run and Sean McVay took one in from 9 yards. He fumbled at the goal line but check out the Tout video on the Register web site to see if indeed he crossed the line.

Update: SCSU trims deficit to 23-20 with 7;16 to play on perfect pass. Groth missed the extra point.

NEW HAVEN FOOTBALL: Chargers at West Chester LIVE

The defending Northeast-10 champion New Haven Chargers open the 2013 season in Pennsylvania against West Chester. Below you'll find game previews, links to live stats and a live blog keeping you updated throughout the game in real-time.

Chargers suffer worst loss in 2 years in opener

The University of New Haven football team opened the 2013 season with its worst loss in two years — a 45-14 non-conference setback at West Chester (Pa.) at Farrell Stadium on Saturday.
UNH coach Pete Rossomando said the Chargers just didn’t make plays.
“We missed a bunch of tackles, we didn’t make a lot of stops when it was critical,” he said. “Offensively, we never seemed to find a rhythm.”
The last time New Haven lost by more than two scores was a 27-7 NCAA Division II playoff loss to Winston Salem State on Dec. 3, 2011. Rossomando said the Chargers need to put the rout behind them and get ready for their Week 2 home opener against Pace.
“I demand that they look at themselves this week and make the adjustments that need to be made so they don’t make the same mistakes twice,” Rossomando said.
Trailing 10-7 late in the second quarter, the Chargers were outscored 21-0 in the last 3 minutes of the quarter and trailed 31-7 at halftime.
“They had that flurry right at the end of the first half that really put us in a hole,” Rossomando said.
The Chargers held West Chester scoreless in the third quarter before being outscored 14-7 in the fourth.
Senior quarterback Ronnie Nelson had a team-high 57 rushing yards, 102 passing yards, threw for a touchdown and ran for one. Sophomore wide receiver Henry Adegunle caught the lone Chargers’ touchdown pass. On defense, senior outside linebacker Sherwood Jonathas had a team-high eight tackles.

EXTRA CHARGE: New Haven ready for first test of season

WEST HAVEN >> The University of New Haven has some question marks as it opens its season at noon today at West Chester (PA.), without quarterback Ryan Osiecki (1,550 passing yards), receiver Jason Thompson (Northeast-10 first team) and defensive end Tom Herd (All-American honorable mention), who have all graduated. Coach Pete Rossomando said he is anxious, but that’s become the norm.
“I’m pretty nervous no matter what the date or who we’re playing,” he said, smiling. “It’s pretty much the same for me.” Read more here.
